The 2024 report describes how developing and maintaining a secure and equitable water future underpins prosperity and peace for all and how poverty and inequality, social tensions, and conflict can amplify water insecurity.

It calls attention to the complex and interlinked relationships between sustainable water management, prosperity and peace, describing how progress in one dimension can have positive, often essential, repercussions on the others.

The launch of the Report will take place at UNESCO HQ during the official celebrations of World Water Day, organized by by UNESCO and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the co-chairs of the World Water Day 2024 campaign, on behalf of UN-Water.

The United Nations World Water Development Report is the United Nation’s flagship report on water. It offers an authoritative and comprehensive assessment of the overall state, use and management of the world’s freshwater resources and aims to provide decision-makers with tools to formulate and implement sustainable water policies.

The production of this annual report is coordinated and published by the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) on behalf of the UN-Water family.

Funded by the Government of Italy, each report represents the coherent and integrated response of the United Nations system to freshwater-related issues and emerging challenges and remain among shining example of the United Nations ‘delivering as one’.
