Downscaling coarse scale global climate models to fine coastal scales is needed to realistically reproduce natural variabilities of coastal current systems and processes subject to expected increases in global mean sea level, surface temperatures and extreme precipitation in the 21st century due to climate change. The objective of this study is to provide a fine scale (222 m resolution using COAWST model) ocean circulation reanalysis (2001-2006) and assessment of seasonal variabilities of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity (SSS) of the coastal ocean around Ibaraki prefecture, Japan, with particular emphasis on the freshwater impact. Model results are validated against SST data observed in-situ at Hasaki point and satellite data from MGDSST for all seasons in the analyzed period by comparing modelled and observed SST mean and variabilities in shallow and deep waters. We also analyzed SSS seasonal variabilities in shallow waters for 2005 and found that they are the biggest in summer and the smallest in autumn.
